▶ Hurontario Street (LRT)

Hurontario Street is an historic road dating back to 1818 (Wikipedia).  Today it forms the central north-south spine of Mississauga from Port Credit north to the Brampton border (and beyond).  Part of the Hurontario corridor in Mississauga is designated as an Urban Growth Centre (map) with the highest population densities and tallest buildings in the City, extending from the downtown core south to the QEW highway.  The Mississauga section of the corridor will have 16 LRT stations including four Major Transit Station Areas (MTSAs) along its length once the City's first LRT is completed.  From a cycling perspective, Hurontario Street is a key north-south artery to efficiently navigate the City and further connect the cycling network.  Parallel Cycle Tracks and in some places Multi-Use Trails are planned to be installed along the entire length of the LRT route (named Hazel McCallion Line in 2022), transforming this transit corridor into a Multimodal Transportation corridor.  ▶ See also from: Multimodal Transportation


Hurontario LRT project - Virtual Open House: June 25, 2026 🚉💻💬

Several cyclists attended the Metrolinx Virtual Open House: June 25, 2026 (VOH webpage) for the Hurontario Street LRT project, held in a bid to re-engage the public following an (overdue) in camera update to Mississauga Council in April 2026.  There is intense interest in the cycle tracks which Metrolinx plans for the entire length of the Hurontario Corridor in parallel with the LRT route.

The Metrolinx video Presentation with some public questions answered during the event is posted on the Metrolinx VOH webpage and on YouTube.  Almost all of the submitted cycling questions were not addressed during the session, but are posted in a written document on the Metrolinx VOH webpage, entitled VOH Questions and Answers (9p PDF).  The eight (8) cycling-oriented questions (1p PDF) are grouped together under the heading Cycling Infrastructure Questions where Metrolinx provides only one generalized answer to the very specific questions:

"The final design for the Hazel McCallion Line corridor includes dedicated cycling infrastructure.  As part of the project's permanent streetscape and landscaping improvements, a multi-use pathway is planned along sections of the corridor, providing enhanced facilities for both cyclists and pedestrians once construction is complete.  The original rollout design [1p PDF dated Feb. 24, 2017 - large file] available on the Metrolinx website illustrates the planned cycling path as part of the overall project design."

Hurontario LRT project - April 2026 update 🚉

"In October 2019, Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario (IO) officially announced Mobilinx is the winning bidder for the future Hazel McCallion Line (also known as the Hurontario light rail transit project), bringing one of the largest infrastructure projects in Ontario to Peel Region." -- Metrolinx Hurontario LRT project website.

Years of public consultation including the cycling community (re Cycle Tracks) had taken place prior to delayed awarding of the contract to build the Hurontario LRT.  Deadlines for completion (end of 2022, then 2024) passed.  At Council (GC): April 22, 2026 (Agenda Item 6.1), Metrolinx provided an update in Closed Session on the status of the project which has disrupted Hurontario Street for years.

▶ Global News Toronto article (April 28, 2026): Metrolinx expects 2028 completion date for Hazel McCallion LRT in Mississauga.  "Sources confirmed to Global News that Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay indicated to the city that his agency is now working to complete construction on the initial route by the spring of 2028.  That target date does not include either the [downtown] loop or the extension.  A spokesperson for Metrolinx would not officially confirm the date."

▶ Mississauga News article (April 24, 2026): Mississauga receives 'good updates' on McCallion LRT construction from Metrolinx -- but it's secret. Metrolinx has yet to confirm a final timeline for the $4.6-billion project under construction since 2020.  "Metrolinx has advised city officials that additional project information is expected to be released to the public in the near future."

▶ Mississauga News article (February 27, 2026): Metrolinx declines Cooksville town hall request amid LRT construction concerns.  "The last official timeline update was provided in 2019.  Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish has mentioned 2029 as a possible timeline.  Metrolinx said it will present to Mississauga council this spring and host an open house or town hall."



Hurontario LRT project - Cycle Tracks 🚉🚲

The cycling community awaits the final design of the cycle tracks which are to be raised above street level and run the full length of the Hurontario Street LRT corridor, except for a Multi-Use Trail (MUT) south of QEW on the east side.

▶ IMAGES are slides 5 and 6 from a City of Mississauga presentation to MCAC (March 19, 2024): HAZEL MCCALLION LINE: Project Update and Cycling Overview (10-slide PDF).  Slide 6 "Derry Road View" is a concept drawing of how the future cycle track might look at an intersection.  Video is posted at Agenda Item 7.1.  Metrolinx has indicated that the chosen proponent (Mobilinx) will present the final cycle track design (TBA).

WE STILL HAVE QUESTIONS: How will cyclists safely traverse intersecting on/off ramps of MTO-controlled 400-series highways (401, 403, 407) and the QEW?  How will the cycle tracks cross the elevated Guideway over Highway 403?  Any details about bike parking at various LRT stations? or taking bicycles onto the LRVs? (48m-long LRT vehicles).
