MISSISSAUGA CYCLING NOW!

▶ Cycling & Transit

Cycling and transit have a complementary relationship, with each travel mode optimizing the strength of the other.  Transit covers longer distances, while cycling can begin or complete the journey with a short ride.  Driving to transit does not accord the flexibility and affordability that riding (or rolling or walking) to transit provides.  In a city where traffic congestion is an increasing concern and micromobility (e.g. shared e-bikes and e-scooters) is becoming more common (ready or not), cycling-transit integration for multimodal trips can transform commuting and urban transportation, relieving car-dependency, possibly eliminating the need for a second car, and reducing the size of massive vehicle parking lots at GO stations, for instance.  ▶ See also from: Cycling and ... ; Mississauga - Cycling Policies; Multimodal Transportation; Minimum Grid

MiWay Five Plus Plan: New focus on first/last kilometer?

[Posted: September 23, 2025]

The MiWay Five Plus Master Plan (2026-2035) includes: "Address first-mile & last-mile connectivity challenges to improve overall access to transit."  Active transportation links to transit hubs will increase BOTH cycling and use of transit for multimodal trips, and complement the 2025 Cycling Master Plan Update.  This is important for cyclists to support!

City Media Advisory (Sept. 8, 2025): Have your say on MiWay’s 2030 transit service plan.

CONTEXT: The synergy of cycling and public transit is largely unrealized in Mississauga due to the absence of safe ~first/last km~ active transportation connections, which must be part of a minimum grid cycling network.  Adequate and secure bicycle parking is also needed at transit stations, especially as there are now restrictions on transporting e-bikes and e-scooters on MiWay buses (Announcement, in effect July 2025) and on GO Transit buses and trains (Metrolinx Bicycle Policy, April 2024), although Metrolinx has a protocol for certifying e-bikes with permissible lithium-ion batteries.

PARTICIPATE: Public consultation on the MiWay 5+ Plan takes place the week of September 22-26 with drop-in sessions listed here.  ▶ There is also a SURVEY open until Friday, October 3, 2025.
