▶ City of Mississauga - Cycling Policies & Resources
Mississauga is a suburban city with a twist. It is not a traditional city growing organically from a town centre, but is an amalgamation (incorporated 1974) of former villages, hamlets and townships. Already bisected by the Credit River, more highways began to criss-cross the City and separate neighbourhoods behind barriers. Rapid development and a car-oriented approach to planning resulted in a congested City that now must retrofit for better transit and active transportation. The population has declined in recent years (unlike other GTA cities). Cycling is a way create a better urban environment. Several consultations and policy updates are underway to create a more liveable, human-scale city, with cycling as a component. ▶ See also: Public Engagement; Cycling Master Plan - Updates; Cycling & Transit
